Why this storm is different
The wind didn’t have to tear shingles off to damage your roof.
Friday’s gusts topped 50 mph. Idaho homes are built to the 2020 Idaho Residential Code, which requires asphalt shingles to be wind-rated for our area. But a rating is tested when shingles are new — a strong windstorm can break the factory adhesive seal that bonds each shingle to the one below it, even when nothing looks missing from the ground.
Once that seal is broken, the shingle lifts in every future wind and lets water underneath. That’s how a storm you’ve already forgotten about turns into an attic leak this fall — and why insurers expect a documented, professional inspection now, while the cause is clearly the storm.
